In recent years, modern electronic equipment is developing towards high-power and miniaturization. Because ceramics have high thermal conductivity and electrical insulation, they have begun to replace the traditional metal substrate as circuit ceramic substrate used in a variety of high-power equipment.

Ceramic substrate realizes the metallization of ceramic and copper through copper cladding technology, which is widely used in LED lighting, solar panels, network switches, laser equipment and automotive electronics, and other equipment, with extremely low current loss and excellent thermal conductivity, which can effectively reduce the thermal resistance from the element to the substrate.

Ceramic substrates are mainly made of three special ceramic materials, namely beryllium oxide ceramics, alumina ceramics, and aluminum nitride ceramics.

1. Beryllium oxide ceramic substrate

Beryllium oxide ceramic is a special ceramic material with high thermal conductivity, good electrical insulation, high-temperature resistance, high melting point, low dielectric constant and dielectric loss, and excellent stable chemical properties.

Beryllium oxide ceramic substrate is widely used in high-power semiconductors, metallurgical crucibles, integrated circuits, microwave electronic devices, and other industrial electronic fields, but the preparation of beryllium oxide ceramic powder will produce toxic and harmful substances, and the cost is high.

2. Alumina ceramic substrate

Alumina ceramic is a kind of special ceramic material with excellent mechanical strength and hardness, good thermal conductivity, and high temperature wear resistance. its thermal conductivity can reach 25W/m-k, low dielectric loss, and can withstand high temperatures above 1700 ℃.

Because the preparation method of alumina powder is simple and the processing technology is mature, it is also used to make circuit ceramic substrate and high frequency insulating ceramic materials in the electronic industry.

3. Aluminum nitride ceramic substrate

Aluminum nitride ceramic is composed of hexagonal AIN, which has stable and excellent electrical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. Its thermal conductivity is close to beryllium oxide, which is more than five times that of alumina ceramic, and its thermal expansion coefficient is close to that of silicon. Its high-temperature resistance makes it can be used as a container and mold for metal melting.

Aluminum nitride is environmentally safe and non-toxic, and its flexural strength is higher than the former two, which can replace the application of beryllium oxide ceramics in industrial electronics.
